Silhouette Vessels

As the daughter of an archeologist growing up in Greece, Bastienne Schmidt feels an innate connection to the idea of a vessel, might it be a lekythos, an amphora or a kylix in the color of red earth. These varying shapes of vessels form a typology of specific objects, which transform themselves into infinite variations in terms of a shape. She is exploring a dialogue between exterior shape and clear outline of an object and the expressive, free flowing visual space that are created within the interior space of the vessel. The installation of these vessels is presented as a typology, following artistic principles of sameness and difference. The eye of the viewer can wander back and forth between the vessels and notice similarities and differences. Schmidt’s artistic process consists of working with process based materials such as espresso coffee and pigment. Silhouette Vessels was exhibited at Ricco Maresca Gallery in 2012.
